Webinar
Petunjuk Elektronik Warga Emas (peMAS) is a child of Universiti Malaya’s e-Sulam initiative. Born out of the effort of a group of young undergraduates from its very own Faculty of Law, it involves a virtual webinar designed to meet the issue of rising cases of fraudulent schemes and online scams targeted at the more gullible and less tech-savvy elders in our community.
Our project aims to improve the awareness of our beloved senior citizens in relation to these blatant fraudulent activities conducted by unscrupulous individuals.
The said webinar will be held on 28/5/2022 (Saturday) from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. through an online platform provided by Zoom. Hope to see you soon!
Topic of Webinar
Everyone has heard of scams before. In fact, we receive so many scam callers every now and then that most of us believe that we’ve seen all their tricks and methods. “You have to try better than that,” we say to ourselves. But real con artists are far more insidious and cunning than you may think, and getting our guards down with a facade of the mundane and the familiar exactly what they want.
Expecting the usual fraud schemes we get distracted by the red herrings and fail completely to detect novel scams as they are created and it is precisely this that allows a con-artist to bring home his catch of the day. It is for this reason that the infamous P.T. Barnum wrote in his memoir that “There’s a sucker born every minute.” And who can be a better prey than unsuspecting elders who already have saved up a fortune throughout their lifetime for retirement, those who are no longer as alert and sharp-minded as they used to be?
Let’s be honest, con artists are getting better at their game than ever: whether it be love scams targeted at the lonely, get-rich-quick schemes for the greedy, false insurance for the cautious— no elder is safe without the adequate knowledge of these scammers. So instead of being paranoid (the paranoid are the easiest to deceive) or maintaining your sense of false security, how about considering our webinar where you will not only learn the various methods of scams (online or otherwise) but also get the chance to interact with the experts and professionals investigators and researchers of the field.
